16th February
Emma entered my bedroom with a bounce in her step and humming a tune I didn’t recognize.
The delicious smell of hot chocolate mixed with an unknown spice wafted by my nose.
“That smells heavenly,” I said, offering up a smile. The day before had been one of the worst in my life, but a good night’s sleep had put a few things in perspective.
“Good morning, Your Highness,” She cried with false cheerfulness. She placed the tray with my morning drink on the table by the window before she bobbed. She glanced at the bag by my bed. “You’re all set to visit your parents, I see.”
I covered my mouth as I yawned. “I’ve been up since four, making sure that I have everything I need. I’m not sure how long I’ll be staying with them.”
Not seeing my parents for nine days had been difficult. Despite everything, I missed them.
I sat at the table and moaned as the hot chocolate warmed my mouth. “This tastes as good as it smells.”
“If I’d known that you were awake, I would have brought you a cup up earlier. Do you need me to bring you breakfast and your clothes now?”
Running my fingers through my long hair to untangle the ends, I said, “No, thanks. I’ll have breakfast downstairs. Do you know if the carriage is ready?”
“Yes, Your Highness, John organized everything last night. How are you feeling this morning?” she looked at me warily. No doubt me shouting at Hannah had got back to her. I’d completely unraveled, and Emma knew it.
“I’ve been better,” I admitted.
She nodded. “You will be fine. Remember that they love you.” She was back to talking about my parents.
I already knew that. I just wished they hadn’t lied to me. There were too many secrets in this palace. First, the mermaid stuff, now about me being adopted. I didn’t want to tell her I was afraid there was more.
“How many guards are accompanying the carriage?” I asked, instead. It seemed a safe topic of conversation.
“There will be two guards driving and two at the back, or so John told me. There will also be five guards ahead and five behind the carriage on horseback. All will be in the red uniform.”
I glanced up at her. “I thought I was to go as inconspicuously as possible.”
“That’s what I said, but John told me his thinking, and it makes sense. Anyone seeing the guards will believe that a guest from the ball is leaving the palace, and they should not suspect that it’s you inside.”
I guess it made sense.
“If anyone does follow you, I believe there is a contingency plan. I’ll go and alert the cook that you’re nearly ready to eat; shall I?”
“Please.”
Once she was gone, I pulled on my jeans and sweater. The weather had been mild yesterday, but it was volatile at the moment, and though it was still too dark to tell, I didn’t hold up much hope that the weather would continue to be nice.
I headed downstairs, my head full of conflicting thoughts.
